Why We Celebrate Labor Day
August 31st, 2014 2:31 PM

Labor Day in the United States is celebrated on the first Monday in September. It was established to celebrate the American Labor movement and is dedicated to the economic and social achievements of workers.

When did this celebration begin? Labor Day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City. After the Haymarket Massacre, which occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886, President Grover Cleveland feared that the commemorating Labor Day on May 1st, could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus in 1887, Labor Day was established as an official holiday in September to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored.

Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September, as it is in Canada. However, in many other countries (more than 80 worldwide), Labor Day is linked with International Workers' Day, which occurs on May 1st.

Labor Day was first established to have  a street parade and reflect on the day. The holiday also marked the return to school. Although school start times now vary.

To take advantage of large numbers of workers free to shop, Labor Day has become an important sales day of the year. Rivalling Black Friday in the Christmas season.

The Labor Day weekend is also considered that last weekend of summer, with getaways and bar be q's. Enjoy this last weekend of summer!
